In September 1870 the Belfast Telegraph published its first newspaper.  1870 was right in the middle of Queen Victoria’s reign and as you have discovered things in Belfast and all big cities were very different then.

The company who produce the Belfast Telegraph thought it would be a good time to start a newspaper as more people were able to read.  In 1870 the Belfast Telegraph cost a half penny.
